Abstract

This dissertation objective is to produce grey cast iron by scrap steels mixing with graphite and silicon. Then, have to find out the mechanical properties of the grey cast iron for the vertical sand mould. First of all, the calculation to form the grey cast iron has to determine from scrap steel which is mild steel, graphite which is carbon and silicon. They are various types of cast iron such as ductile cast iron, malleable iron and white cast iron with different percentage of carbon contain. This calculation is an important step to find out the actual percentage of carbon contains to produce grey cast iron. The next step is the technique to making pattern and sand mould. All the dimension and shrinkage allowances of the pattern have to calculate. After pattern was done, the skillful of making sand mould is necessary to avoid crack or break when carry it. Protective personal equipment is first requirement in the melting process, the knowledge to handle the furnace machine and preheat step of the scrap steels before melting are important in this section. And last is doing the experiments which are spectrometer experiment, microstructure inspection, tensile testing, hardness testing and charpy impact testing to determine the mechanical properties of final casting product in vertical sand mould. After carried out this project, we are able to know that casting in vertical sand mould have different mechanical properties depends on which layer or which side of the casting product.
