Abstract
Flow over different type of aerofoil such as NACA 0009, NACA 0012, NACA 0015, NACA 0018, NACA 0021, NACA 6409, NACA 8409 and DU06 W200 and flow over Darrieus type straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) with NACA 6409 are simulated using ANSYS Fluent software. The solution setup parameters are SST k-ω turbulence model and unsteady flow simulations. Wind speed is set at 8.9 m/s and first part of problem domain including the aerofoil is using C-Mesh Domain and second part of problem domain including rotating blades is sliding mesh technique. The effects of boundary layer mesh and time step convergence are determined to improve the accuracy of solution. The performance of 2-Dimensional Darrieus type VAWT is compared at different tip speed ratios. The critical problem for Darrieus type VAWT is the start-up performance,therefore, the flow patterns is analysed by examining velocity and pressure contours
