Abstract

This dissertation objective is to produce gray cast iron of three different percentage of carbon content by mixing pig iron with scrap steels. Then have to find out the mechanical properties of the gray cast iron for the three different percentage of carbon content. First of all, the actual carbon content in the pig iron has to be obtained. Than it is important to determine the following three percentage of carbon content that are required to produce gray cast iron. The next step is the technique to making pattern and sand mould. Protective personal equipment is first requirement in the melting process, the knowledge to handle the furnace machine and preheat step the scrap steels with pig iron before melting are important in this section. The mechanical property testings such as hardness test, tensile test, chilling effect and tensile test were employed to compare the properties of three different percentage of carbon content in gray cast iron. After carried out this project, we are able to know the mechanical properties depends on its percentage of carbon content in gray cast iron.
