Abstract

Recycling the scrap metal in the foundry practice to reduce the embodies energy of gray cast iron product was evaluated in this dissertation. The purpose of carry out this project is to study the mechanical behaviours, of three different carbon content range in grey cast iron which produced by steel scrap instead of using pig iron. Other than that, the microstructure present will be study as well and also the liquid to solid transition behavior by using cooling curve. The Brineil Hardness value of specimen in this experiment is greater than standard gray cast iron ASTM class 20 and 35, slightly lower than Brineil Hardness gray cast iron ASTM class 40. The microstructure of three different grade of specimens are not fully archive the graphite flake Type A and mostly Type C and Type E graphite flakes. In the other hand, the tensile strength of the specimens are archive ASTM class 35 standard but lower than ASTM class 40.
