Abstract
In this project, used springs were obtained from workshop were used for testing. The main objective of this project is to investigate the problems of spring in automotive industry. In addition, the project also aims to identify the failure factor of the spring. Heat treatment technique is also applied to improve the mechanical properties of the spring. Various experimental simulation and testings were performed in this project. Firstly is visual inspection where the surface characteristics of the spring are observed. Next is the chemical composition analysis. This is to determine the chemical composition of the material used for the spring. Microstructure examination is also carried out in this project. The aim of this examination is to observe the change in grain structure under different situation. In order to determine the mechanical properties of the spring at different conditions, hardness test is performed. Last but not least, the heat treatment stress relieving technique is performed on the spring to remove the residual internal stresses and hence improve its mechanical properties. From the result obtained, the spring material for both automobiles is made of low alloy steels. On the other hand, due to the spring did not fail after the experimental simulation, the visual inspection is carried out by observing the sectioned specimen. The microstructure under different conditions, namely before and after simulation as well as after heat treatment are compared. In an overview, this dissertation will be discuss on the failure analysis to find out the cause for the failure of spring and also experimental simulation to simulate the service condition as well as performing heat treatment to improve the spring's mechanical properties.
