Abstract

This final year project titled as “Wireless Barcode-based Attendance Taking System” focuses on constructing an alternative system that taking attendance for college. The current attendance taking system is working without vital problem but somehow there are minor imperfections. Hence, this project intends to provide a system that performs the same functionality with better efficiency and effectiveness. By utilizing this project, all lecturers are required to install a mobile application on their smart phone and this mobile application is capable to perform barcode scanning. Student ID card is an item that all students in our college possess while all the barcode on the ID card are different and unique that it represents the identity of the student. As soon as the barcode on student ID card is retrieved, the mobile application will send the text converted from barcode to another end of this project, which is a system that operates on computer. The receiving end of this project is a system that made up of database, graphical user interface and the output files. The desktop application will verify the identity of students by comparing to the information stored in database and record the time when the text converted from barcode has been received. At the same time, the desktop application can be used to edit and update the information stored in database as well. After all the attendance of students is recorded, they will be compiled and accumulated in a Microsoft Excel file for viewing and summarizing purpose. This project is been concluded that it is working as desired in actual and somehow, it can be further improved to be a more automated system.
