Abstract
Battery powered micro-devices are rapidly proliferating in everyday usage due mainly to the advantages of increased productivity and convenience in the user’s lifestyle among various other benefits. Presently, the practical approach is to reduce the power consumption of micro-devices while increasing the energy density of batteries. However, the ideal solution is energy harvesting, which provides energy autonomous (battery-free) operation based on scavenging or harvesting the small amounts of ambient energy available in the target environment of the micro-device. Piezoelectric materials used to convert oscillatory mechanical energy into electrical energy. This technology, together with innovative mechanical coupling designs, can form the basis for harvesting energy from mechanical motion. Instead of vibration, this project dealing with rotational motion. This is because that is not much energy harvesting based on rotational motion in the market. Nowadays, the majority of the transportation vehicle consists of wheels, it exposes an opportunity, which is energy harvesting based on rotational motion. In this project, energy harvester for rotating environments using offset pendulum was created. By using the impact of the offset pendulum to the PZT materials while the bicycle’s wheel rotates about 13.5kph (normal cycling speed), 3mW power generated with 15V voltage and 0.2mA current. With the power generated by PZT MPG created, it is able to power the micro-devices such as pressure sensors and accelerometer, to inform the user the status of the speed and tyre pressure. In conclusion, PZT MPG created can apply to the majority of the transportation that consists of wheels.
