Abstract

Electricity is crucial as billions of people are relying on electricity to carry out their usual work and business. The electrical blackout and power failure will waste millions hours of efficiency thus costing the unbearable loss. Data processing in the computer are lost, food store in the refrigerator are spoiled, investor lost track of the stock market and many other negative effects are caused by the power failure. Thus, people are aware of the consequences bring by the blackout and the importance to ensure the continuity of electricity at all time. As majority of activity required electricity, people start to develop devices in order to minimize the lost. The problems caused by power outage can be solved by a power failure detector. The power failure detector is designed to be fully functional when installed at a conventional home. The primary functions of the system is to notify the user whenever a power outage has occurred, so the user would take necessary actions to minimize the losses. In order to enable the system to be able to perform more tasks, the power failure detector is implemented with Arduino Uno and Android Application. With the implementation, the system are able to communicate with an Android Smartphone and perform several tasks. The application are designed to have the following functionalities, which is indication of the current power status of the home, the time elapsed of power outage, SMS notification to the user absence at home and update the phone number for the notification. The Android Application will make the system to be more intelligent and convenient. With the Android Application implemented in the system, the system can be easily upgraded whenever Google updates the Android SDK. More features are accessible and possible to be upgraded in the future, examples are the Whatsapp implementation, secondary power activation, streaming of the smartphones camera and many other more.
