Abstract

Home automation system plays a vital role in this century as it is a trend to higher living standard in the future. It is not just greatly improved our daily lifestyle, but also provided convenient for elderly and less ability people to access to their home appliances in a more effortless way. This paper presents the implementation of wireless home automation control system by utilising the in-built mobile phone functions and advance communication technologies. Hence, it allows the users to manage home appliances at anytime anywhere. Arduino Uno microcontroller has been used in this project to analyse the commands received from the mobile phone through SMS and then execute the commands by sending the requested signals to trigger the appliances. When the appliances are triggered, the microcontroller will send a notification to the user’s mobile phone regarding current status. This system provided the cost effective solution which required only a low cost GSM enabled mobile phone to perform the tasks. Apart from that, this system also allows the user to trigger the appliances through Wi-Fi technology. The microcontroller will receive the data from the web server continuously although the user is connected to different network. The system will response to the user’s command in the website interface created. Therefore, the appliances will be triggered accordingly to the user’s command as listed in the website. In short, the combination of SMS and Wi-Fi is used to control the home appliances whereby the Arduino Uno microcontroller decodes the information contained in the SMS or from web browser via Wi-Fi to control the home appliances. The integration of these elements brings convenience to the end users.
