Abstract

The title of this project is “Smart Solar Power System”. It is a great oppurtunity for me to do the research in detail regarding the solar energy since solar energy is getting more and more common in our life. Using photovoltaic panel to collect solar energy and convert those energy to generate electricity is a very common technology nowadays. This technology already launch and developed in many countrys. There are a lot of photovoltaic system such as directed PV system, stand-alone PV system and grid connected system. In this project, we are using stand alone PV system. The stand-alone PV system consist of few compenents such as PV panel, controller, battery and load. There are 2 or more PV panel is used to collect solar energy and generate energy and transfer those energy to application or battery. The controller is used to control the charging rate of the battery and choose the highest energy supply for PV panel. The battery is used to storage the the energy. The objective of this project is developing and designing a smart controller which able to select the highest energy supply from the solar panel. A simulation is carried out to study the performance of the smart controller and to reach the objective. Matlab Simulink software will be used in this project to carry out the simulation. 2 solar panel with the constant solar irradiance 1000 W/m2 is connected to a controller, a ammeter is connected in series to get the current value and voltmeter connected in parellel to get the voltage. IV graph and PV graph will be generated to determine the efficiency of the solar panel. DC-DC converter is used as the controller in this project in order to boost up the the voltage from low to high. The dc-dc converter is connected with the low voltage solar panel and simulated to get the result. There are several testing will be carried out, for example testing the characteristic of 2 different parameter of solar panel, testing the connection of the solar panel with the DC-DC converter, testing the third solar panel with lower operating voltage. The result of the testing will be compared and discussed.
