Abstract

Metals are very common to be used in residential buildings nowadays. However, they are always subjected to corrosive attacks due to some factors. Therefore, this dissertation is executed to study the occurrence of metallic corrosion problem in Malaysian Domestic buildings. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the metallic corrosion problems that occur in local domestic buildings and propose the suitable solution to overcome the metallic corrosion problems. The reviews of the literatures have been carried out at chapter 2, chapter 3 and chapter 4. Basically, chapter 2 defines the types and causes of metallic corrosion problem in local domestic building. The effects of metallic corrosion have been reviewed in chapter 3, while the corrosion protective methods are defined in chapter 4. In order to achieve the objectives of this research, interviews were conducted. Besides, case studies are also carried out to study the common areas that always encountering corrosive attacks in local domestic building. Explanation of questionnaire design is being discussed in chapter 5. The data collected from the interviews will be analyzed in chapter 6. Conclusion and recommendation for further studies has been discussed in chapter 7. Conclusions have been obtained from the data analysis in chapter 6. The area that often subjected to corrosion in local domestic buildings is those elements located at exterior of building. The major factor leads to the occurrence of metallic corrosion is the environment factor. The effect that majority concerned of local domestic building is the aesthetic. The corrosion protective method that suitable to be used in local domestic buildings is painting. The recommendations for further studies have been made to strengthen and compliment this research. The recommendations include further study and analysis the severity of metallic corrosion problems in local domestic buildings by comparing the occurrence of metallic corrosion in local commercial buildings and local industrial buildings, further investigate the awareness of local domestic building occupants on the occurrence of metallic corrosion issues in local domestic buildings, explore for latest technologies available to resist the occurrence of metallic corrosion and further study with the occurrence of metallic corrosion on structural elements in local domestic building which are normally unable to be observed from the outlook.
