Abstract

In accordance to UBBL and Bomba department, hotel in Malaysia shall be equipped with appropriate fire detection systems. A fire detection system without doubt, is important as an early warning regarding presence of fire to surrounding people. It is specially designed to detect any unwanted presence of fire by monitoring environmental changes associated with fire combustion. There are basically three types of fire detection system mainly used in Malaysia which are smoke, heat and flame detection system. This piece of research aims to evaluate out which types of fire detection system will be the most suitable for application in various parts of luxury high rise hotel. Additional to that, this research will also study the importance, basic components, and various types of fire detection system as well as factors that need to be considered in choosing fire detection system. To achieve the aim, data are collected by means of structured interview and case study. A structured interview is conducted with three (3) experts who are experienced in fire detection system in hotel. For the case study, the author had gone to a high rise hotel located in Klang Valley for an in-depth analysis regarding types of fire detection system installed and used in that hotel. In summation, there is no solely a single type of fire detection system that can suit for all application in hotel. In certain parts of hotel, the choice of selection of types of fire detection system mainly depends on the surrounding ambient environment, location and usage of that particular area. However, in some certain parts of hotel, specific type of fire detection system is necessary to be installed at that particular area. It might also be possible to have two types of fire detection system in the same location of hotel while there are some locations that do not required any fire detection system to be equipped.
