Abstract
The objective of this project is to study the effectiveness of Acrylonitrile Butadiene rubber (NBR) as Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) modifier at different weight ratio of NBR at 10%, 20% and 30% to identify the effect in mechanical properties of PVC. Other than incorporating virgin NBR into PVC, reprocessed NBR is also used to replace virgin NBR to achieve lower raw material cost in production also to promote product life cycle by reclaiming used NBR product. Both PVC/virgin NBR and PVC/reprocessed NBR blends had gone through the same processes and tests. Ultimate tensile strength, elastic modulus, elongation at break are obtained test using tensile test. Thermal aging test is carried out to study the aging resistance. Morphology studies had been carried out to study the adhesion between PVC and NBR. From this project, the elongation at break is improved tremendously, but ultimate tensile strength and elastic modulus had reduced as amount of NBR added increased. Overall, PVC/virgin NBR outperformed PVC/reprocessed NBR blend. However, the difference is still in an acceptable range.
