Abstract

The project title is “Domestic Outdoor Automation”. It comprises a rain sensor, motion sensor, webcam, plant watering system and clothes hanger system. The objective of the project is to help alleviate labor shortage in Malaysia. A PC (desktop computer or laptop) is used to control the whole system. PC is chosen as the control unit of this Outdoor Automation Project because PC allows monitoring and viewing of devices and software used in the systems. A USB to RS-232 serial port converter is used to interface between the PC and devices. The software used to create the GUI interface is Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0. To operate the system, the user has to set date and time on the GUI interface. The rain sensor will then detect the condition of the weather. If it is raining, the motor will turn the clothes hanger back into the hut. If it is sunny, the motor will turn the clothes hanger out from the hut. In addition to the above functions, the system will also perform daily plant watering task or apply pesticide/fertilizer to the plant based on the scheduled dates and time.
