Abstract

It is often seen that local online English newspapers publish at least one piece of article about food on a daily basis while local online English newspaper food reviews on the other hand are published at least once or twice every week. The main objective of this study is to find out the coverage of local online English newspaper food reviews alongside the reading habits and the influence of these food reviews. By using the quantitative survey and content analysis methods, the researcher has found out that majority of respondents always, often and sometimes read local online English newspaper food reviews when combined but seldom read local online English newspaper food reviews when the options are separated individually. Furthermore, results also show that the top two most looked for aspects by respondents are the rating and price. These two elements on the other hand are present in all local online English newspaper food reviews – which shows the awareness of local online English newspapers towards their readers’ preference. Other than that, the researcher has found out that respondents are heavily influenced on their thoughts and actions but are split when it comes to talking about food reviews to the people around them. By using the Uses and Gratifications Theory, the researcher deduces that respondents look towards local online English newspaper food reviews to gain information and as a means of communication in their daily lives – as their cognitive needs and social integrative needs are satisfied. Thus, the reading habits of local online English newspaper food reviews alongside the coverage and influence are related to one another but are limited to being influenced on talking to the people around them about food reviews read online.
