Abstract

This research examines the relationship between the tendencies of news coverage by the Malaysia mainstream media before, during and after the 14th General Election (GE14). For comparison, both the mainstream (NST) and alternative news organization (MKINI) are chosen for this research. Studies are conducted starting from May 2, 2018 (Wednesday) to May 16, 2018 (Wednesday), a week before and after the election. Results are obtained in the form of tendencies of articles coverage on the then incumbent Barisan Nasional (BN) party as well as the former opposition party, Pakatan Harapan (PH). News articles will be coded and labelled as positive, negative, or neutral by three coders onto a coding sheet for categorization. Five categories included in the content analysis are BN+ (positive report), BN- (negative report), N (neutral), PH+ (positive report) and PH- (negative report). The acquired data are then compiled and transferred into the SPSS frequency tabulation system for analysis.
