Abstract
Two thiosemicarbazide derived Schiff bases were successfully synthesized and characterized. 4-Methyl-3-thiosemicarbazide was reacted with trans-chalcone (TC) and 4-chlorochalcone (CC) to form the two Schiff bases. The synthesized Schiff bases were characterized with Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Fourier - Transformed Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer and 1H and 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometer. These two Schiff bases existed as thione tautomers at solid and solution states. The antioxidant activity was study by Diphenyl-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay to obtained Ascorbic acid equivalent antioxidant capacity (AEAC) and half maximal inhibition concentration value (IC50). Thiosemicarbazide Schiff base that derived from CC was found to have better antioxidant effect in term of AEAC and IC50.
