Abstract

Banana, Musa sapientum is a type of fruit that most widely consumed in the world. Banana is rich in minerals and vitamins that are needed for human health. Banana peel was found be rich in phytochemical contents and exhibit antimicrobial properties. In this study, two types of bananas, which are Banana Berangan (Musa acuminata c.v. Berangan) and Banana Emas (Musa acuminate colla 'Lady Finger') were chosen for the study of their antimicrobial activity on Escherichia coli, pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. The selected bacteria were identified by gram staining method and biochemical tests such as catalase test, mobility test, indole test, hydrogen sulphide test(H2S) and simmon citrate test. Qualitative phytochemical tests were conducted on the banana peels extract and followed by total phenolic and flavonoid content determination. The results showed that both banana peel extract have antimicrobial activity against E. coli, P. aeruginosa and S. aureus. The phytochemical screening test demonstrated phenolics, flavonoid, tannins, saponins and glycosides were present and absence in steroids and resin in both extracts. Musa acuminata × c.v. Berangan show higher phenolic (188.361 ± 0 mg GAE/g extract) and flavonoid (80.6741 ± 2.7964 mg CE/g extract) than Musa acuminata 'Lady Finger' with phenolic (5.664 ± 3.2701 mg GAE/g extract) and flavonoid (33.378 ± 0 mg CE/g extract). The study suggested the potential application of M. acuminata c.v. Berangan and M. acuminate colla 'Lady Finger' peel extract as antibacterial agent.
