Abstract
Construction industry plays a significant role in the development of a country. This sector has contributed a substantial amount of income to the country’s economy. The prompt development of construction industry relies a lot on the quality of workmanship of the construction projects. In fact, one of the most critical factors in the success of construction project is its quality. Therefore, quality assessment became a vital topic for the construction industry. The Malaysian construction players, in view of their market position in the industry, have the choice to implement the quality assessment system in their building construction projects. It is seems as an important milestone for any of the construction company. Although the Malaysian government, with the collaboration with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) had formulate the system and encourage all the construction companies in Malaysia to the implementation of such system, there are still many small and middle-sized companies neglect it. This is mainly due to the low level of awareness on the system among them. Furthermore, construction projects involved many different parts as well as activities from different professionals and this will resulting in the lack of integration and collaboration between them if they are not well-managed. Some may found that the Quality Assessment System in Construction (QLASSIC) is a must in the project but some may not. Besides, the lack of skilled labour in the industry will also affect the quality and standard of the project as the workmanship and skilled or experience of most of the unskilled labour were not up to the required standard. This study discusses the level of awareness and the challenges on the implementation of QLASSIC in the Malaysian construction industry. The methodology used are literature review and through questionnaires. The descriptive statistic such as the frequency and the percentage were used for describing the background of the respondents. Meanwhile, the mean distribution analysis was used to analyze the views on the challenges on the QLASSIC implementation and the effective strategies to alleviate the said problem. The significance of this study is that the implementation of QLASSIC is expected to become more widespread in Malaysian construction industry in the coming years because of the government’s effort in promoting QLASSIC.
