Abstract

Construction delays are common phenomenon in civil engineering project in Malaysia which including road construction projects. Hence, it is essential to study and analyse causes of road construction delays. This paper studied a list of construction delays causes that gathered from different researchers with different types of construction, different countries, different periods and different numbers of delay causes and delay groups. A questionnaire with 42 causes of delay were distributed to consultants, contractors and owner. 210 sets of questionnaire were distributed and 60 sets of questionnaire were received. Relative Importance Index (RII) is calculated and all values of the delay causes of road construction projects in Malaysia are determined. The test results reveal good correlation of causes and groups between site engineers and contractors while the low correlation between consultants and site engineers and between consultants and contractors. Therefore, there are no root causes that can be taking granted to be most and least effective delay causes. According to the data analysis, the most contributing causes and groups to delays were discussed, and some future recommendations were proposed in order to control and minimize delays in road construction projects in Malaysia. This paper also useful for road construction parties and allows detailed and repeatable analysis of the progress of a road construction project in order to facilitate and achieve a competitive level of time, cost and quality for effective road construction projects.
