Abstract

Physical activity and eating habits play an important role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This study aimed to identify the association between eating habits and physical activity level among food science students in Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TARUC). In this cross-sectional study, a total of 183 university students , aged 18 to 24 years old, were selected from TARUC food science course in Setapak. Information on socio-demographics, eating habits and physical activity level (IPAQ) were obtained. International Physical Activity Questionnaires (IPAQ) long form was used to identify the physical activity level. Among the respondents, majority of them (50.3%) were in low physical activity level, followed by 38.8% and 10.9% for moderate and high physical activity level respectively. Majority of them (55.7%) reported that they consumed food prepared by mother. Breakfast (66.7%) were the most frequent skipped meal chosen by the university students. Respondent who consumed lunch at at house, canteen and restaurant have significant difference in their physical activity level (P-value < 0.05). The low physical activity level among university students need serious attention. Eating habits and physical activity among students should be focus and intervention to increase the physical activity should be conducted in the future include a well balanced physical activity with the proper dietary pattern.
