Abstract

A study that focusing on the affective responses and the viewing motivations of Malaysian young adults of watching the horror film of New French Extremity Martyrs (2008) by applying theories of The Pleasure-Arousal-Dominance theory (PAD) and Uses and Gratification theory. The depiction of extreme violence and gore scenes is the significant characteristics of the New French Extremity movement. A total 15 volunteers’ participants of Malaysian young adults were participated in three focus group film screening discussion in particular who belongs to people who have preference and do not have preference towards horror film genre. Martyrs (2008), a New French Extremity horror film with extreme violence, torture and gory visual and movie plot was shown to the 15 participants during the focus group. In Malaysia, there is no opportunity to see this kind of film genre exposed in the Malaysia film industry. The findings of focus groups were transcribed and analyse with qualitative research method based on the interpretation and observation of the researcher during the focus group film screening.
