Abstract

Self-concept is a part of self-development as it is the belief of how individuals define themselves. The idea of self-concept consists of self-esteem, self-image and ideal self. Due to the evolvement of technology, social media has become an essential part in human’s lives. Popular social networking site like Instagram has also made an influence to the self-concept of every individual. The study aims to focus on the impact of Instagram on self-concept of individuals. Furthermore, the study examines the relationship between Instagram and self-concept. There are 150 Instagram users in Malaysia have participated in this study. The methodologies that used to collect data for the research are questionnaire survey and interview method. 16 of the 150 respondents that fit the criteria will be selected to participate in the interview. The findings of the research indicate a significant positive impact of Instagram towards self-concept of oneself. One of the factors that affect the content that Instagram users usually engage in is found to be age. Moreover, the result shows that different genders have different types of perceptions on self-concept. Instagram users that have different background, such as their occupation status, is also a factor that affects the purpose that they use Instagram. The findings stipulate that Instagram does not make a negative influence on the self-concept of individuals. It often varies based on viewpoint of Instagram users when they face different kind of situations. The research concludes that Instagram plays a vital role in building the self-concept of individuals.
