Abstract

Silver nanoparticles were synthesized from Cymbopogon citratus plant extract using microwave reactor which plant extract are environment-friendly and cost-effective. Therefore, it is an efficient and economical method. This project investigates the mechanism of the synthesis process of silver nanoparticles by plant active substances from lemongrass extract and the properties of silver nanoparticles which are zeta potential and antimicrobial activity. Beside, best condition to synthesise silver nanoparticles also will be evaluate. Lemongrass extract was prepared by using infusion and ultrasound extraction method. Uv-Vis, FTIR and particle analyzer were used to authenticate the formation of silver nanoparticles. The best condition to synthesise silver nanoparticles were pH9.5 of the reaction mixture under microwave radiation for 2 minutes at 90°C. The average particle size that synthesized under best condition were 83.98nm and 6.49nm. The surface plasmon resonance absorption band of silver nanoparticles were at the range 401-421nm in Uv-Vis. Besides, silver nanoparticles possess an antimicrobial effect against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus by disc diffusion test. The zeta potential and aging test indicate that the silver nanoparticles synthesize under best condition were not stable. The mean zeta potential of silver nanoparticles was -25.03mV while agglomeration of silver nanoparticles was observed in the aging test. By using this method to synthesize silver nanoparticles, the energy and time required to complete the reaction will be reduce.
