Abstract

This research discuss about the implementation of the Behaviour Based Safety (BBS) approach, the behavioural factors, process involved and barriers. Construction industry is said to be one of the most hazardous industries in Malaysia as recent occurrences of highly publicized construction site accidents. Although there are rules or acts that set by few of the Legislative Intervention and Regulative Institutions such as DOSH, OSHA, CIDB and SOCSO, but the accident rates in Construction Industry are still the highest compared to others sectors. Based on the records of accident and high rates of injuries, the factors involved include human behaviour, inappropriate use of dangerous machinery and equipment, non-compliance to the various set of working procedure and unpleasant working condition. In order to improve safety performance in this sector, an effective safety management system should be concerned to overcome the occupational safety and health problems. The main objective of this study is to justify the implementation of BBS system in Construction Industry. Through literature reviews, the behavioural factor, process guidance and also the barriers of implementation of Behaviour Based Safety (BBS) approach were developed where it is adopted from the previous researchers. The data collection from the survey were analysed by using the mean index of Standard Package for Social Science (SPSS). This research shows that the human behavioural were positively related with the safety performance in Construction Industry. BBS also considered as an effective management in order to reduce accident rates and also improve safety management in this sector.
