Abstract

The purpose of this research paper is to examine the importance level of sustainable development, explore the level of understanding on the concept of sustainable development and finally is to suggest some effective strategies in the development of education for sustainable development in Malaysia. The research involved answering questionnaires by 50 respondents from students and lecturers from Faculty of Built Environment, and Faculty of Engineering and Technology at Tunku Abdul Rahman University College. Data is being collected and analysed through mix method which combine qualitative and quantitative method. Questionnaire results were analysed by using SPSS analysis. The meaning of sustainable development is quite broad and not many people understand about sustainable development. Respondents only know the sustainable development is important but they do not know what sustainable development is and most of the respondents agree on the benefits that generated from the implementation of sustainable development. Their knowledge towards sustainable development are mainly from the environmental sector. They noticed the importance of educating public on the awareness of sustainable development in understanding the concept. The research paper has contributed to the public on raising public awareness on the sustainable development issues and aware of the lack of education in sustainable development. At the end of the research paper, it also suggests few effective strategies in the development of education for sustainable development.
