Abstract

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an information and communication technology (ICT) that is innovated to bring improvement on the performance in the construction industry. In Malaysia, BIM technology is still unfamiliar as it is going on track in exposing to the organisation for the specialist to adopt the new culture. BIM is a tool that provides good association, communication and performance throughout the project lifecycle. However, majority of the local construction organisation is still reluctant to employ such technology although it is promoted to be beneficial to their work performance. The objectives of this research are to study the current practice of the workplace in Malaysian construction industry, identify the capabilities of quantity surveyor to perform BIM and the consequences to the future role of quantity surveyor if BIM is implemented. A total 50 sets of questionnaire have been distributed to the professional parties within Klang Valley and Penang while 42 sets have been collected. The conclusion summarised that the construction parties are standing in opinion that the implementation of BIM would not affect the role of quantity surveyor in the future. Meanwhile, the research provides the findings that BIM tools has the potential to bring positive effects to the construction industry as it gives better effectiveness and promotes higher accuracy of works. In fact, each party in construction field carries a vital role to be collaborative and cooperative among each other in adopting the new technology culture.
