Abstract

Since the initiation of idea of implementation of BIM by Malaysia government in 2007, the Malaysian government declared the implementation of BIM into construction in 2010, and followed by the first infrastructure construction project with the application of BIM which is National Cancer Institute in Sepang. In recent years, Malaysian government has started to put more effort on efficiency and cost saving of projects development by promoting the innovative BIM-based procurement approaches such IPD (Cleves, J. & Dal Gallo, L., 2012). However, the technology adoption rate, especially the implementation of BIM in procurement method is considered very slow compared to other countries of the world even though with the involvement of government in Malaysian construction industry. This makes it important to study on the current practice, possible barriers which hinder the implementation of BIM based procurement method. A research involving quantitative and qualitative method was used for this study using questionnaires distributed limit to only construction players. The implication of this finding shows that BIM based procurement method is likely to be the future of the construction industry with the positive attitude received toward acceptance of the BIM based procurement method. Keywords: Application of BIM; procurement; Malaysia construction industry.
