Abstract

In recent years, the problems of lack of local workers participate in the construction industry was getting serious. This had led to the employer’s having an excuse to employ foreign workers. This research aims to determine the employer’s perspective toward the local employment in the Malaysian construction industry. As well as, the current issues in construction and the employment issue. Moreover, this study was to determine the ways of encouraging the employer in employing the local workmen in the construction industry. All of these is because the construction industry as a ‘3D’ working place which represents dangerous, difficult and dirty. Other than this factor, the low wages and the higher education among the citizens especially on the young generation also was the factor leading the citizens not willing works in the construction industry. The huge influx of foreign workers will affect the living standards and wages in Malaysia. Besides, the crime rate, social problems and dangerous diseases brought by foreign workers also increase. Moreover, the strategies to encourage the employer in employing local workers. The government had legal change towards the foreign workers, more strict law is applied. The method used to carry out analysis for this study are involved literature reviews and data collection. The data was collected through questionnaire. Besides, based on the results received by the respondents had proven that these issues were really exists. There were lack of local workmen participant in construction industry and the main reason was due to low wages and the ‘3D’ environment workplace. Influx of foreign workers will bring the negative impact such as diseases, cash outflow and others. Furthermore, the best solution to solve the employment issues were admen the minimum wage system.
