Abstract

The objective of this study to investigate the dietary intake of long-chain (LC) omega-3 Fatty Acids, to be more specifically on the intake of the polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFAs) and monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFAs) in Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TARC) using the dietary assessment tools which is 24-Hour dietary recall and food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) among the Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TARC) students. The purposes of this study to evaluate and analysis the dietary intake and to educate the students on the knowledge of the nutrition. About 378 participants were selected among the population of the TARUC. All of them were students. They were consisting of male and female of different ethnic. While, the test subject age range were between from 18 years old to 29 years old. A sociodemographic form together with two types of assessment of dietary intake form; 24-hour dietary recall and FFQ were used to do the data collection for this research. The estimated period of this study has been carried out was about seven weeks. The recommended dietary intake of MUFA was from 15% to 20% (FAO&WHO, 2008). While for the PUFA were from 6% to 11% (FAO&WHO, 2008). For the 24-hour dietary recall, the high range consumption of the omega-3 fatty acid among the male were highest which were 60 students (15.6%). Most of the female students consumed low range of omega-3 fatty acid which were 101 students (26.3%). For the FFQ, the results shown that moderate consumption of the omega-3 fatty acid among the students for both male (21.1%) and the female (150%) were highest. From the overall, it can be said that there is least frequency for both male (≤0.05%) and female (0.3%) to consume high range of the omega-3 fatty acid. For the living condition it shown that both 24-hour dietary recall and FFQ shows the significant differences. The gender, ethnic and education shown the significant differences for the 24-hour dietary recall but it shown no significance differences for the FFQ. FFQ shown that both male and female has fulfilled the recommendation of the MUFA and PUFA overall but for the 24-hour dietary it shown that does not fulfilled the dietary recommendation for the day. It can be said that both genders less likely to meet recommended intake for per day.
