Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the physiological and psychological responses on no music, slow music and very slow music during the post-exercise recovery and post-recovery performance run in football players. 12 football players from TARUC (age = 20.83±1.40 years, BMI = 22.39±2.89 kg.m-2, VO2max = 51.51±4.91 mL.kg-1.min-1) were recruited to participate in this study. This randomized crossover study required all participants to undergo all three trials (SM, VSM and NMC trial). All participants ran a 30-minute continuous run with 70% of their VO2max for all three trials and then recovered with three different interventions, which are SM (music with 61-80bpm), VSM (music with 40-60bpm) or NMC (no music control) for 30 minutes. After the 30 minutes, participants were required to complete a run-to-exhaustion incremental run with speed similar to the VO2max test of preliminary testing. Results showed that there were significant increase in the time-to-exhuastion of the post-recovery incremental run in the VSM trial than the SM trial (p=0.039). Besides, there was also a significantly lower “Vigour” mood state in the NMC trial compared to the VSM trial (p=0.027). In conclusion, the VSM trial was found to have significantly better post-recovery performances compared to the other two trials. From a better physiological and psychological recovery of the VSM trial, it was able to positively affect the post-recovery performances, allowing participants to run longer.
