Abstract

Sporting Behaviours (Prosocial and Anti-social) were found to have a relationship with Personality Traits. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the association between Sporting Behaviours and Big Five Personality. This study utilized quantity research and have adapted the online survey method for data collection. A total of 96 college athletes (41 Males and 55 Females;mean age = 20.51; SD = 1.603) from Tunku Abdul Rahman University College, KL Main Campus have participated in this research. Respondents completed two questionnaire which were the Prosocial and Anti-social Behaviours in Sports Scale (Kavussanu & Boardley, 2009), consisting 20 questions with a reported reliability whereAnti-social Behaviour toward Teammate (Intraclass Correlation Coefficient, ICC = 0.92), Anti-social Behaviour toward Opponent (ICC = 0.83), Prosocial Behaviour toward Teammate (0.88), Prosocial Behaviour toward Opponent (ICC = 0.75). Whereas the Big Five Inventory (John & Srivastava, 1999), consists of 44 items with a reported reliability range where Extraversion (r = 0.77), Agreeableness (r = 0.90), Conscientiousness (r = 0.88), Neuroticism (r = 0.73) and Openness (r = 0.85) respectively. Additional demographic data collected were Age, Gender, Types of Sports Involved and Highest Level of Achievement. An analysis were done on the descriptive statistics of student’s demographic data. The data then were analysed using inferential statistics (Pearson product-moment correlation, Independent T-test and One-way Anova) Correlation analysis had revealed that Sporting Behaviours toward Teammate has a significant positive correlation with Extraversion (r = 0.354, p = 0.000), Conscientiousness (r = 0.248, p = 0.015), Openness (r = 0.254, p = 0.007) and Agreeableness (r = 0.429, p = 0.000). Prosocial Behaviours toward Opponent showed a significant positive correlation with Openness (r = 0.361, p = 0.000). Whereas Anti-social Behaviours toward Teammate / Opponent showed a significant negative correlation with Agreeableness with the value of (r = - 0.272, p = 0.007) towards Teammate and (r = - 0.288, p = 0.004) towards Opponent. This research have proven that Sporting Behaviours do in fact are associated with individual’s personality.
