Abstract

University students face a lot of challenges and stresses in nowadays that lead to increase the risk of negative outcomes. However, not all university students have problematic outcomes. The level of resilience and the way students perceive on their quality of life can end up with a different result despite they are experiencing a similar event. There is a great deal of studies conducted on resilience. However, there is lack of study conducted on how resilience relate with quality of life. Therefore, a correlational study was conducted to examine the relationship between resilience and quality of life among the undergraduates. This study also aimed to examine the resilience across different gender among the undergraduates. A total of 150 undergraduate students from a private university college in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia participated in this study. Resilience is measured using Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale 2003 (CD-RICS) while Quality of Life is measured using World Health Organisation Quality of Life Field Trial Version 1996 (WHOQOL-BREF). The data collected is analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences Statistics Version 20 (SPSS) to determine descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Pearson product moment correlation between the two variables, and independent t-test to examine the gender differences of resilience. The results show that there is a moderate positive correlation between resilience and quality of life among the undergraduates (r (139) = .61, p < .01). Meanwhile, the results also show that there is no significant different of gender in the level of resilience among Malaysian undergraduates (t (139) = .59, p < .01). In short, the results reflect a linkage between resilience and quality of life of the undergraduates. When an individual scored higher in resilience, he or she may results in perceived better quality of life. The findings of this study allow the educators or counselors to design intervention to improve and build the resiliency of the students from the particular university.
