Abstract

Static stretching is a progression of slowly lengthening the muscle and maintain it at a constant length for 30 to 60 seconds whereas Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) combined active movement and reciprocal inhibition to increase flexibility. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of static stretching and AIS on flutter kick time performance among young swimmers. A total number of 30 young male swimmers were recruited from Dswim Academy. Subjects were required to perform a 25m flutter kicking swims with a pull buoy after receiving 2 methods of stretching (Static Stretching and AIS) and unstretched condition on separate days in randomised order. The range of motion of ankle joints (dorsi and plantar flexion) were measured before and after the 25m flutter kicking swims. Results showed that subjects were able to swim fastest in AIS condition (26.25 ± 2.24s), followed byNo Stretch (26.78s ± 2.61) with static stretch (26.40s ± 2.10), (p=0.028). For Static Stretch (26.40 ± 2.10s) withthe t-value of 1.024 was not significant (p=0.314). For No stretch (26.78 ± 2.61s) with AIS condition (26.25s ± 2.24), the t-value of 3.672 was significant (p=0.001). However, there were no significant improvement on leg ankle dorsi and plantar flexion flexibility. In conclusion, both static stretching and AIS significantly improve 25m flutter kick time performance among the young swimmers.
