Abstract

Nowadays, technologies become more advanced and many machines that interact with human have been developed. Therefore, communication between man-machine has become one of the important fields in this century. Facial emotion recognition is one of the ways to enhance interaction between man-machine. This study proposes an emotion recognition system that is able to identify seven basic emotions, which are neutral, happiness, sadness, disgust, anger, fear, and surprise in human face images. A convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is used to recognize the facial emotion. CNN is one of the multilayer perceptions feedforward artificial neural networks. This study is to recognize the facial emotion of subject static only, no video sequence is used. Pre-processing is conducted and statically features are extracted before the data is trained or tested by the CNN algorithm
