In this paper, a study is conducted on nonlinear partial differential equation based on Lie symmetry analysis method. By taking advantage of Maple procedures and Lie’s approach, Rayleigh wave equation that describes surface wave particularly in seismology is solved analytically to yield exact solutions to the equation. Lie symmetry analysis method is performed on the equation to get infinitesimal generator, symmetry group and similarity reductions. The symmetries found are used to construct numerous solutions of Rayleigh wave equation which will be useful in investigating the characteristics of Rayleigh wave as well as for researches on physical phenomena.
