Abstract

In this study, the presence of eleven types of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in milk powder samples and cow milk samples were determined. Ten different brands of milk powder and five different location of cow milk samples were used. The eleven types of PAH that were analysed are benzo [a] anthracene (BaA), chrysene (CHR), benzo [b] fluoranthene (BbF), benzo [k] fluoranthene (BkF), benzo[a] pyrene (BaP), anthracene (ANT), fluoranthene (FLT), pyrene (PYR), fluorine (FLR), phenanthrene (PHE) and benzo [g,h,i] perylene (BgP). Quantitative determination of PAHs was done by using HPLC equipped with fluorescence detector. The method validation was done to confirm the detection of PAHs by using HPLC-FLD. Based on the results of milk powder samples, the concentration of phenanthrene (PHE) compound was found to be the highest among all other PAHs which was ranging from 11.80 μg/L to 26.44 μg/L. However, the milk powder sample 5 contains the highest concentration of antrancene (ANT) compound which was 44.55 μg/L. Based on the result of cow milk samples, the cow milks from Batu Caves and Sentul were found to contain the highest concentration of phenanthrene (PHE) and antrancene (ANT) compounds compared to the other locations. The concentration of PHE in cow milks bought from Batu Caves and Sentul were 157.14 μg/L and 238.56 μg/L respectively. The concentration of ANT in cow milks bought from Batu Caves and Sentul were 61.25 μg/L and 135.11 μg/L respectively.
