Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relative validities of 3 days food record and food frequency questionnaire for whole grain intake among schoolchildren in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. There subject participated in this study were schoolchildren from year 4 and year 5. A total of 110 respondent took part in this study (male respondent= 49, female respondent= 63). There were 57 respondent from year 4 and 54 respondent from year 5. For food frequency questionnaire, an interview session was conduct in schools with the respondent to collect the data. Then, the 3 day food record was given to the respondent and collected after 1 week. The data of collected from 3 day food record and food frequency questionnaire were analysed. Based on the two dietary assessment tool, the Spearman correlation coefficient was 0.73. Misclassification which is classified into opposite quartile is less than 1%. FFQ and 3 day FR of the method exhibited acceptable level of agreement. However, percentage of median difference show notable disparity for the wholegrain intake. The median intake of wholegrain among the schoolchildren aged 10 and 11 was 15.01g/day (FFQ) and 6.45g/day (3 day FR). This shows that the schoolchildren’s whole grain intake doesn’t meet the dietary recommendation. In conclusion, the FFQ tended to overestimate the whole grain intake among the schoolchildren compared to 3 day FR. However, both method shows good correlation coefficient. FFQ also able to rank individual into same quartile and low number of misclassification shown.
