Abstract
This study aims to examine the relationship between academic self-efficacy and academic dishonesty, and to explore the gender differences in academic self-efficacy and academic dishonesty amongst undergraduates. The target population of this study is the undergraduates from a local university college in Malaysia. A total of 160 participants are selected, including 80 males and 80 females. The instruments adopted in this study are Student Self-Efficacy (SSE) Scale and Academic Integrity Inventory. The results showed that academic self-efficacy is significantly and negatively correlated with academic dishonesty, with p = .041, and r = -.162. This study also found a significant gender difference in academic dishonesty (p = .028). For academic self-efficacy, there is no significant gender difference (p = .304). The results provide new insights to the researcher, and indicate that there might be other underlying variables that influence academic self-efficacy and academic dishonesty, such as culture. Besides, the generalizability of this study may be low because of the quota sampling method adopted during data collection. There are some recommendations for future studies, for example, replicate the study in other conditions, take cultural factors into consideration when examine the gender difference in academic self-efficacy, and adopt other research methods rather than using survey questionnaires.
