Abstract

Decay and deterioration of educational building in Malaysia become a common problem nowadays. Even with reasonable care and action has been carried out, building still tends to decay and deteriorated due uncontrollable or external factors such as environmental factor. Such problem become a treat to the user of educational building as decay or deterioration of building may cause serious injuries to human and fatality. Thus, this research focus on investigation of decay and deterioration of educational building in Malaysia. The research objective are to identify and differentiate common decay and deterioration occurred in three (3) different educational buildings and to determine it is repairable or not and propose suitable remedies or prevention method for common decay and deterioration found in educational building. The first objective achieved through surveying and observation to three (3) different educational building. Based on attentive observation and survey by the researcher, the common decay and deterioration is then differentiated and identified with supporting pictures as evidences. While the second objective aimed to further satisfy the first objective which is provided suitable remedies for the identified decay and deterioration found. The research method for second objective is interview. The decay and deterioration found in objective one is then restructured to use and convert as interview question. Based on the type of decay and deterioration, interviewee is then required to determine whether the decay or deterioration repairable or not. Interviewee also required to provide idea, suggestion, prevention and remedies method for such decay and deterioration. The recorded idea and suggestion is then further interpreted by the researcher into a clear sentences with supporting citation. With this research, people tends to aware of surrounding decay and deterioration of educational buildings. In another words, this research able to raise safety consciousness of public user that aware of occurred building deterioration and decay, x building user tends to avoid the hazarded area. This research discussed and explained many factors which contributing to building deterioration and decay. Thus, it provide a basis to building coordinator and management of the building personnel to conduct an effective building inspection. This research served as a guideline of building deterioration remedies method for building management team. In order to have overview and concept on building decay and deterioration, this research play an important roles in render the definition, factors, effects, symptom and significant of building decay and deterioration.
