Abstract

Magazines used to be a popular medium for people to read whether be it for leisure or information but the sales of magazines are going into declination and there may be many factors that cause this declination in the magazine industry. This study aims to find out the reasons of why the sales of magazines are declining by narrowing it down to the reading habits of the young adults in Malaysia, the content preferences of the young adults in Malaysia in the context of English magazines and reasons of why they read magazines. In this research, it is found that magazines are the least preferred medium for the young adults in Malaysia to read. In addition, the young adults in Malaysia read sometimes and they also seldom search for information through magazines. As for the online magazines, they visit magazine websites sometimes. Next, Local Fashion Magazine is the most preferred content chosen by the respondents and the reason why they read magazine is because they have interest in the particular topic. The Uses and Gratification theory is applied where the Local Fashion magazine is chosen to satisfy the needs of the readers and it is responsibility of the readers to choose their most preferred medium. This theory is applied where entertainment is one of its general types of gratifications. Local and International Entertainment magazine is one of the most preferred content by the young adults in Malaysia which aligns with the general type of gratifications of this theory. This also shows that English magazine managed to be a form of entertainment for the young adults in Malaysia when it comes to Local and International magazines.
