Abstract

Sexual related news stories are always getting people attention, no matter what medium they come from or even if they are sensationalize or not by news writers. The main objective was to see whether there were different engagements between sexual related and non-sexual related news stories in Facebook. Besides that, this researcher also wanted to dive into the preferences that were impacting the engagements of sexual related news posts. After conducting and obtaining the results by using survey questionnaire with Google Forms, the researcher discovered that non-sexual related news posts have stronger Facebook engagements than sexual related news posts. Furthermore, findings indicated from the respondents that they might or might not suffer cognitive overload or overstimulation when reading sexual related news. However, in this particular research, majority of the respondents do not bother whether the news is sexual related or not. Therefore, the researcher concludes that every respondent’s news preference in Facebook varies and there are always internal and external factors that could impact the respondent’s news preferences. Finally, this research’s results also reveal that the respondents who read sexual related news is due to their curiosity and their self-consciousness towards their surroundings. This means they read sexual related news to fulfil their cognitive needs and because of their cognitive dissonance. Nonetheless, most of the respondents do not think that reading sexual related news posts in Facebook can fulfil their affective needs, social integrative needs and their escapism.
