Abstract

Schiff base is characterized by the azomethine functional group (>C=N) and synthesized by the condensation of carbonyl compound with primary amine. Thiosemicarbazone is one of the derivatives of Schiff base and exhibits widespread and extensive biological activities. In this project, thiosemicarbazone (PT4ACT) derived from 4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazide (PT) and 4-(4-axetoxyphenyl)butan-2-one (4ACT) was synthesized by conventional method with solvent of ethanol. Besides that, Cd(II), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) metal complexes deriving from PT4ACT were synthesized in methanolic solution. The synthesized PT4ACT and transition metal complexes were characterized using spectroscopic techniques such as FT-IR, UV-Vis, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and F-AAS spectroscopy. Also, the characterization of the compounds was done through thermal analysis such as DSC and TGA. The structures of the compounds were found to be identical to the postulated structures. In order to explore the biological activities of the compounds, antioxidant and antimicrobial studies were done. DPPH method was used to evaluate the concentration at which the compounds inhibit half of the DPPH (IC50). The result shows that only PT4ACT and the Cu(II) metal complex possess antioxidant activity having IC50 of 23.50μg/mL and 47.22μg/mL respectively. Disk diffusion method and broth microdilution method were conducted to study the antibacterial properties of the compounds.
