Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study the electrochemical and thermal properties of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)/ poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) polymer blend electrolyte with Magnesium Trifluoromethanesulfonate salt (MgTf). Polymer electrolyte has been found useful in electrochemistry compared to other types of electrolyte. Two polymer electrolyte systems were prepared. The first system was to study the optimum ratio of PEG/PEMA with a fixed concentration of MgTf. In contrast, the second system was to scrutinize the effect of different salt ratio in the polymer blend electrolytes. The PEG/PEMA polymer blend achieved the optimum ionic conductivity of 3.13 × 10-6 Scm-1 (standard deviation: 1.78 × 10-6 Scm-1)with blending of 0.72 PEG/ 0.18PEMA with 10 wt.% of MgTf salt at ambient temperature for the first system. The thermal properties were determined by DSC studies where the Tg was 5.27℃ and the melting temperature was 49.06℃. TGA studies showed the thermal stability to be at 372.78℃. The highest ionic conductivity 1.85 × 10-5 Scm-1 with the standard deviation of 7.41 × 10-6 Scm-1 was achieved in the second system. The Tg and the melting temperature of this system were 5.77℃ and 48.62℃, respectively. The thermal stability of the second system was determined to be 488.82℃.The characteristics peaks of each material in the polymer electrolyte were observed in FTIR analysis.
