Abstract

The objectives of this study are to determine the physical- chemical characteristics of CAC, to investigate the adsorption capacity of CAC, to determine the raw material deriving the CAC, to extrapolate the usages of CAC and also as a source of comparison for other types of activated carbon. The characterizations tests involved, determination of moisture content, ash content, matter soluble in water, matter soluble in acid, pH, Iron content, decolourizing power, filtrability and oil retention which are following Indian Standard, IS877, 1989. Some other analyses were added such as SEM analysis, FTIR analysis, iodine number determination, batch adsorption isotherm study and kinetic study. It was shown that the CAC contains 4.2717%/5.5641% of moisture content, 7.8484% of ash content, pH of 9.15, iodine number of 1939.84mg/g, MB number (decolorizing power) of 643.61mg/g, Iron content of 2.697%, filtrability of 3 hours 44 mins and oil retention of 7.78%. It exhibits pseudo 2nd order with intraparticle diffusion as the rate determining step. The raw materials of CAC could not be determined and the usages of CAC are limited for adsorption and desorption processes. CAC from R&M chemicals company are suspected to be activated with high concentration of activator concentration. The CAC should fit Freundlich equation which represents heterogenous system.
