Abstract
Fresh water plays an important role in human's daily life to ensure our well-beings. However, most of the freshwater sources were polluted by the discharges from industries. With the hasty growth of industries like metal plating, mining industries, batteries, fertilizer industries, tanning process, pulp and paper industries, heavy metals are discharged into the surroundings more and more over time. Bio-adsorbent that are low in cost such as spent coffee grounds are used to adsorbed copper (II) ions in aqueous solutions. The effect of contact time, pH, adsorbent dose and initial metal concentration were studied. From the experiments, the optimum pH for the adsorption process was when the pH = 4. The optimum adsorbent dose used in the experiments are set at 1g of spent coffee grounds. 3mg/L of initial metal concentrations are chosen as the optimum initial concentration and was applied in most of the experiments. Spent coffee grounds have porous surface which increases its surface area for adsorption and was proven to be effective in adsorbing metal ions in aqueous solutions. The adsorption of copper (II) by the spent coffee grounds was found to be 88.03% at the optimal condition. For adsorption isotherm studies, Langmuir model was found to fit the adsorption process of copper (II) ions and spent coffee grounds the best due to its higher correlation coefficient.
