Abstract

In this project, a home-assembled Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) had been devised. The major work for this project involved multiple designing tasks of the construction of VSM. Our aims objectives are, (a) to study the construction of Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM), (b) to design a home-built VSM; and, (c) to study and design the detection coil system. Several key parameters of the signal detection coils were studied. The coil configuration was selected based on dual-paring of coils winding in opposite directions in order to minimize the offset due to imperfection of windings and the geometry of the coil winding unit. The sensitivity of the coil is capable to achieve the measurement of magnetization down to 10-3 emu, which should be sufficient for probing the ferromagnetic or paramagnetic materials.
