Abstract

Language proficiency plays an important role in aiding students in their school subjects as well as in learning. In recent past, Malaysian students struggle to cope with their studies because of the language barrier they faced while in school or at home. There are various tools and similar systems that helps individuals in improving their language proficiency but most of the applications available does not support the common Malaysian languages. Thus, developing a Multilingual Multimedia Storybook Reader (MMSR) would be ideal for Malaysians in improving and expanding their language proficiency. MMSR is separated into three distinct sub-systems, which are the Storybook Reader Mobile Application, Contributor Mobile Application and Backend Server. In this project, literature review has been done by studying the similar system and observation has been taken to understand the system flow. Besides that, interview has been conducted with the original developers of MMSR to have better understanding on the previous system overview and flow. Waterfall Model was adopted to develop the MMSR system and paper prototype had performed before any coding takes place to have the whole system flow and design recorded. During development stage, module testing and integration testing have been performed to ensure Storybook Reader Mobile Application, Storybook Contributor Mobile Application and Backend Server are integrate as a system and work well. After the Storybook Contributor application has been developed, user of the application was capable to contribute new storybook, translate storybook that has been published and create new version of MMSR storybook. However, user is not able to resend the contributed storybook after his/her storybook has been rejected and the available system language is English language only, these are the improvements that shall be implement in the future.
