Abstract

Language proficiency plays an important role in aiding students in their school subjects as well as in learning. In recent past, Malaysian students struggle to cope with their studies because of the language barrier they faced while in school or at home. There are various tools and similar systems that helps individuals in improving their language proficiency but most of the applications available does not support the common Malaysian languages. Thus, developing a Multilingual Multimedia Storybook Reader (MMSR) system would be ideal for Malaysian students in improving and expanding their language proficiency. MMSR is separated into three distinct sub-systems, which are the Reader Mobile Application, Backend Server and the Contributor Mobile Application. In this project, literature review has been done by studying similar systems and observation has been conducted to have a better understanding of the system flow. Besides that, interview was conducted with the original developer of MMSR to have an even better understanding on the previous system overview and flow. Waterfall Model was adopted to develop the MMSR System and paper prototype had been performed before coding takes place to ensure that the overall system flow to be developed is well defined. In the development stage, module testing and integration testing had been performed to ensure that the Contributor Mobile Application, Backend Server and the Reader Mobile Application are integrated as a complete system and works well according to the user and functional requirements. Overall, the Backend Server has fulfilled the functional and user requirements and is able to integrate with the other two sub-systems. Improvements such as a better storybook reviewing system and implementations of additional filters to the reports to increase efficiency can be added in the near future.
