Abstract

Construction industry has become one of the significant contributors to Malaysia’s economic growth and productivity level. However, as compared to developed countries, the productivity achieved by Malaysia is still a big gap lag and the construction industry adapt changes very slow compared with others industry. Therefore, the government has enforced new regulation and standard to be implemented in construction sector in order to make a leap and bounds improvement on the ways to realise Vision 2020. Although government have put much more effort in encouraging new technique in the construction industry, but the adopting rate of lean principle in construction industry is still very poor. Many researches start working on this statement and found out that the successful rate in implementation of lean construction in Malaysia are very low as implementation of lean principles in construction industry required every construction personnel have the knowledge toward lean principles and the intention to adopt lean thinking. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the people-related issues faced in implementation of lean construction and at the same time to investigate the human errors caused by the poor awareness and knowledge on lean construction. A semi-structure interview was conducted with 3 respondents to collected data and findings for this study. The result revealed that every person has a different understanding of lean principles. To implement lean principles in construction industry, each of the construction personnel must has a same understanding and so call lean thinking to ensure lean principles can be implemented successfully. The limitations of this study were low response rate to participate for the interview and time constraints. Therefore, further study may consider interviewing a greater variety of individuals, including those who might be impartial and possibly resistant to lean.
